What Litmus is

Litmus is a cloud-based email pre-send QA platform used by marketing and email production teams to preview and test emails before deployment. It renders a given HTML email across 90-100+ email clients and devices, including Outlook desktop versions, Gmail, Apple Mail and dark mode variants, so teams can catch rendering breakage without manually sending to every client. It includes a code editor and a visual, no-code editor for building templates, plus automated checks for spam-trigger content, broken links, and accessibility tags. Litmus was acquired by Validity in 2025, aligning it with Validity's Everest deliverability and reputation product line.

Day to day, email marketers, designers and developers use Litmus to catch layout and rendering errors before sending, run pre-send checklists, and collaborate with proofing and commenting tools. Its Email Guardian feature offers ongoing monitoring of live campaigns for rendering issues after send. Teams also use it to check subject lines and basic spam-filter risk, though its spam testing is lighter than dedicated inbox placement tools.

It sits in the design, templates & testing part of an email stack - build emails that render and read well everywhere. In practice it is the right pick when your priority is: design and qa teams shipping polished campaigns.

What it does well

The capabilities teams rely on most are client render previews, pre-send qa checklist, email analytics. Taken together these cover the day-to-day work in this category, and they are the features worth testing during a trial rather than reading about.

Litmus is best known for the breadth and speed of its email client preview matrix (90+ clients including hard-to-test Outlook desktop versions and dark mode), and for bundling pre-send QA, proofing/collaboration and basic analytics in one workflow trusted by large marketing teams.

In real use the strongest points people report are industry standard for qa; strong collaboration features.

Pricing tiers

Litmus is a paid product. Litmus is subscription-based with no free tier; the entry Basic plan was discontinued in August 2025 and the current entry point (Core) starts around $500/month, a steep increase from the prior $79-199/month tiers, with custom enterprise pricing above that.

Pricing pages move often, so confirm the current figures with the vendor before you budget. The number worth modelling is not the licence fee on its own but the cost per delivered email once bounces, suppressed contacts and spam-foldered sends are taken out.

Ideal customer profile

  • Best fit: Design and QA teams shipping polished campaigns.
  • Where it sits in the stack: Design, templates & testing - build emails that render and read well everywhere.
  • Budget profile: Paid - suited to teams comfortable with this commercial model.
  • Probably not for you if: expensive for small teams would block your team.

What it connects to

Litmus is commonly wired into Slack, Trello, HubSpot, SAP, OneDrive, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Marketo, Chrome extension, Adobe Campaign and Oracle Eloqua. Check that the specific objects and events you rely on are covered, not just that a logo appears on the integrations page - shallow connectors are a frequent source of rework.

Where it falls short

No tool in this space is complete on its own. With Litmus the trade-offs to plan around are expensive for small teams. None of these are reasons to avoid it - they are the gaps another layer of your stack needs to fill.

The August 2025 pricing overhaul removed the affordable entry plan and raised the mid-tier price roughly 151%, making it hard to justify for freelancers, small teams or agencies; it is a testing and QA tool, not a sending platform, and its spam/deliverability testing is less deep than specialist inbox placement tools.

A useful test before committing: send a real campaign through your intended setup, then check where it actually lands across Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and your customers' corporate filters. Tooling that looks identical on a feature list often behaves very differently once reputation and authentication are involved.

How it fits a deliverability stack

Deliverability is decided by four things: the reputation of the sending domain and mailbox, the quality of the list, correct SPF, DKIM and DMARC authentication, and proof of where mail actually lands. Litmus covers part of that picture. The mistake most teams make is buying four separate products for those four jobs and still having no single place that tells them whether the last campaign reached the inbox.

Warmy runs warm-up, inbox placement testing, email verification and DMARC monitoring as one platform, which is why Litmus usually sits alongside it rather than against it: it keeps doing what it is good at, while reputation, placement and authentication are handled in one loop.

Litmus offers pre-send spam content checks and, since the Validity acquisition, closer ties to Everest's inbox placement and reputation data, but on its own it does not manage sending infrastructure, IP/domain reputation, or DNS authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC) - those require a dedicated deliverability or authentication tool.
